Newcastle set to now beat Man City to Kieran Tierney signing – sources

Newcastle United are in pole position to sign Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Tyneside club are preparing for a major squad overhaul this summer and the 25-year-old left-back has emerged as a top target.

Man City and Aston Villa are also interested in signing Tierney, but Newcastle are now considered favourites to complete a deal for the Scotland international.

Football Insider sources revealed on Thursday (18 May) that Newcastle are in a very strong position to complete a deal for Tierney.

It is understood that the Gunners left-back would prefer a move that brings him closer to his family in Scotland and therefore is enticed by an offer to move to the North East.

Tierney is also excited by the prospect of playing in the Champions League for Newcastle if they retain their spot in the top four this season.

He has fallen out of favour at the Emirates this season following the summer arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko from City.

Tierney has only played a total of 1,421 minutes of football in 2022/23 after losing his starting spot to the Ukrainian.

Injuries have also hindered Tierney’s time in North London, and he has agreed with Arsenal that a move away is the best option for all parties this summer.

Tierney joined Arsenal in a £25million move in 2019 and he has gone on to make 121 appearances for the side, scoring five goals and assisting 14 times.
