Newcastle United overhaul underway as Wyness reveals: ‘they’re making moves’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted revamping Newcastle’s St James’ Park home could be “so powerful” for the club in future.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed that the Magpies are “making moves” around the stadium site and branded the Reuben Brothers, who are co-owners of the club, “experts of construction”.

Newcastle’s Saudi-backed owners have long aimed to expand the club’s St James’ Park stadium and have conducted a feasibility study in a bid to kickstart the project.

The Magpies have developed a big-money fan zone across the street from the ground which is set to open this summer – and have also purchased other land in the vicinity.

Newcastle ‘making moves’ to revamp St James’ Park, says Wyness

St James’ Park currently holds 52,404 and is the 12th-largest stadium in the United Kingdom.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s good that they will try and stay at St James’ Park. It’s the right location in the city centre, and it’s an iconic football home.

“It’s the right thing.

“If you look at the way the stadium is constructed, it’s always looked a bit higgledy-piggledy to me. If they make it a full bowl, it would be so powerful.

“They’re going to fill it every week regardless, so the club will want as much capacity as possible.

“It’s a great stadium and city. The location makes everything a great experience, with the local pubs and restaurants nearby – rather than having an out-of-town situation.

“I hope they do it. I know Newcastle have been making moves in the land around the stadium and the Reuben Brothers are experts of construction.”
