Newcastle United stand ‘right on the edge’ of breaching financial rules – Wyness
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has suggested Newcastle United are “right on the edge” of breaking Financial Fair Play rules.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Magpies “should have done better commercially” and taken advantage of their Champions League qualification.
Newcastle have seen their spending limited by FFP rules in recent windows with manager Eddie Howe confirming the regulations are a “problem” for the club and their ambitious Saudi ownership.
The Magpies announced a £73.4million loss for the 2022-23 season in January, up from the loss of £70.7million in the previous campaign.
Newcastle ‘should’ve done better commercially’ as new FFP claim emerges
Clubs are only permitted to lose a maximum of £105million under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) – with Everton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest already confirmed to have exceeded that amount.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think Newcastle are right on the edge of the FFP regulations.
“I believe they’re going to be just about okay.
“Newcastle should have done better commercially in the last year, especially since they were in the Champions League.
“They could have been more aggressive with sponsorship and other revenue streams.
“Nevertheless, I believe they’ll be okay.

“There is always going to be a turnover of players as the new owners go through the phases of taking them up the league.
“Trying to keep them up the top of the league is another phase in itself.”
