Medical expert: Wilson could be out ‘four months’ after ‘explosive’ Newcastle footage analysed

Callum Wilson could be out of action for Newcastle United for as long as “four months” if he has ruptured his Achilles tendon.

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Wilson collapsed clutching the back of his leg before half-time in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Man United on Monday (27 December).

The 29-year-old striker, who missed five matches with a hamstring injury earlier this season, played on for five minutes before eventually coming off.

As quoted by The Mirror on Tuesday (28 December), manager Eddie Howe revealed that Wilson is facing “months” on the sidelines.

Dinnery, who has extensively analysed the footage of the incident, claims that Wilson could be out until April.

“When you look at the way he fell to the ground, his initial thoughts were that he was kicked,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“But looking at the video evidence, there was no evidence of that. But the high-intensity action of that explosive movement has caused a tear or rupture.

“He plants his left foot and as he goes to push away, his heel goes to the floor. That initially made me think this was his Achilles.

“I’ve seen that kind of mechanism with a rupture of the Achilles. If that was the case, we are talking a minimum of four months.

“However, I would say that the good thing is that he was able to stay on the pitch briefly.

In that regard, maybe there was some hope that it wasn’t too severe, maybe more to do with the calf than the Achilles.

“It could still be a grade two possibly a grade three. If that was the case, I’m thinking six to eight weeks as a ballpark best-case scenario.

“Beyond that, it could be three months-plus if there has been a rupture and surgery is required.”

Wilson has six goals in 15 Premier League appearances this term.

His Newcastle side are 19th in the table after 19 matches.
