Newcastle United tell Martin Dubravka to find new club – sources

Newcastle United have told Martin Dubravka he is free to find a new club this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Slovakia international has been informed by the north-east giants they are working on signing a younger No.2 to provide cover and competition for Nick Pope.

Negotiations are underway over a deal to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford following his side’s relegation to the Championship.

Football Insider revealed on 9 June the Lancashire club are holding out for a £20million fee after rejecting an offer worth £15million including add-ons for the 21-year-old.

Celtic have registered an interest in signing Dubravka, but sources say a deal for him to join the Glasgow giants is not close at this stage.

The 35-year-old is under contract at St James’ Park until June 2025.

Newcastle line up James Trafford deal to replace Martin Dubravka

Dubravka featured heavily for Newcastle last season after Pope dislocated his shoulder in December and didn’t return until the final game of the campaign in the 4-2 victory over Brentford.

The Slovakian made 30 appearances across the season and kept eight clean sheets as he helped his side to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

But after making 163 appearances for the Tynesiders since signing from Sparta Prague in 2018, they have now told him he is free to find a new club this summer.

Trafford is the prime candidate to take Dubravka’s spot as the backup goalkeeper at St James’ Park, but Newcastle are not alone in their interest in signing him this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 3 June Bayern Munich are rivalling the north-east giants and Liverpool to land a deal for the shot-stopper.

It comes despite the Englishman enduring a mixed first campaign with Burnley after being dropped for the final 10 games of the season, having kept just two clean sheets in 28 Premier League appearances.
