Finance guru: Newcastle United backed to seal more American moves after Darren Eales reveal
Darren Eales’ arrival signals that Newcastle United will look to take inspiration from the United States market as they continue their growth under the PIF regime.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “really smart move” to install Eales at St James’ Park.
The Magpies revealed last Friday (15 July) that Eales had joined as their new CEO.
The 49-year-old has left his position with MLS side Atlanta United to take the role.
Atlanta have won multiple trophies under his stewardship, with regular attendances of 70,000 and the biggest profits in the United States.
Plumley forecasts that Eales’ American know-how will serve Newcastle well.
“I think it’s a really smart move,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“Whether it tells us anything about where they want to go in the long term, I’m not sure. But it’s smart because Atlanta, who have grown quickly and considerably in the MLS. He has been a big part of that.
“With attendances of up to 70,000 and his success in the commercial department, he brings with him a wealth of experience in the American market.

“It is a different model of team sports, we know that. But a lot of Premier League clubs have looked to take inspiration from America.
“There is a couple of things in that in terms of the knowledge of the sport that they can tap into. All around, it seems like a smart move.”
