Newcastle United tipped to complete ‘£15m’ Matt Targett deal after update – pundit

Newcastle United should sign Matt Targett as soon as the summer transfer window opens.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Aston Villa loanee’s future.

Targett, 26, joined Newcastle on loan in the final hours of the January transfer window.

He has played every minute of every game since moving to St James’ Park, other than the Magpies’ game against his parent club.

As quoted by The Chronicle (21 April), the left-back claimed he “hopes something can be sorted” regarding his future at Newcastle.

McAvennie claims any deal should be easy to complete based on how Targett’s loan spell has gone.

“He’s clearly enjoying himself up there and he’s playing every game,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Gerrard clearly didn’t think he was good enough so he signed the boy Digne from Everton.

“So there probably isn’t a future there for him. At Newcastle though, they love him.

“He’s a wonderful player so if Newcastle do have that £15million option I would tell them to get it done as soon as the window opens.

“Why would you not? He’s helped them get out of a tricky situation and he hasn’t put a foot wrong.”

On 8 March, The Chronicle reported Newcastle and Aston Villa have agreed a £15million fee for the left-back.

He made 17 appearances for the Villains during the first half of the current Premier League season.

In other news, a pundit has claimed Newcastle United will do “whatever it takes” in the hunt for a striker after a £30million reveal.
