Newcastle United tipped to complete ‘essential’ January signing amid £200m reveal – pundit
Kevin Campbell has claimed January additions will be “essential” to Newcastle United claiming a first top-four finish for 19 years.
The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Eddie Howe’s side won’t shy away from spending big after success in the past two transfer windows.
Newcastle beat third-place Tottenham 2-1 away from home on Sunday (23 October) to move up into fourth place in the Premier League.
Newcastle have spent £200million on players since their Saudi-backed takeover last year (2021) – with imports like Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, and Kieran Trippier all flourishing at St James’ Park.
However, club chief Dan Ashworth has warned fans that the level of spending is “unsustainable” and will need to be tapered off.
Campbell hailed Eddie Howe for his work with players like Miguel Almiron and Fabian Schar – who have stepped up their game since the big-money investment.
When asked if Newcastle could spend big in January in an attempt to bank a top-four finish, he told Football Insider: “I think that’s essential – if the business can be done.
“The regime has been very good at Newcastle, and Eddie Howe has to take credit as well. He hasn’t demanded a lot of players.
“He’s taken his time and built, as well as improved the players who were already at the club.
“The spine of the team was strengthened, and they’re going from strength to strength.

“There aren’t many teams who can go away and hunt a team like Tottenham down away from home.
“I think if they’re close to that top four, I can’t see them turning down the opportunity to go out and spend money.”
