Newcastle United to spend ‘massive fee’ on striker amid ‘£80m’ claim – pundit

Newcastle United will have to shell out a “massive” fee for a new striker this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ attempts to sign a striker.

On 12 July, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported Newcastle’s hierarchy have unanimously agreed that Isak would be an ideal signing and talks with Real Sociedad have already taken place.

It is said the Magpies would have to spend the rest of their summer transfer budget on the 22-year-old attacker who scored six goals in 32 La Liga appearances during 2021-22.

Kenny says Newcastle have no choice but to pay a significant fee for a new hitman.

“For me, it has to be a striker,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I think Newcastle have to be looking at someone who will get them 15 to 20 goals next season.

“If they are to progress then they definitely need that striker, that guy who is going to take the chances players like Chris Wood won’t.

“But those players don’t come cheap, look at Liverpool spending £80million on Nunez. That’s a guy who has essentially had one good season.

“So they have to spend a massive fee, Newcastle. They don’t have a choice.”

Newcastle’s current striker options are Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle.

Wilson scored eight Premier League goals in 2021-22 while Wood scored two for Newcastle and Gayle failed to find the net.
