Newcastle United told to sign '£40m' striker amid 'incredible' Callum Wilson claim - pundit

Newcastle United could spend £40million on a new striker to help star man Callum Wilson.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ hunt for a new attacker.

On Thursday (4 August), Football Insider revealed Leicester have now told Newcastle that Maddison, 25, is not for sale after turning down £40million and £50million bids in recent days.

McLeish claims Newcastle need to focus on finding someone who can ease the burden on Wilson who missed the majority of the 2021-22 season through injury.

“Newcastle need a striker, we know that,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Callum Wilson is an incredible striker but he is always injured and that is no good. Chris Wood has not done the things we thought he would.

“So there has to be something happening there then. The money is there, could we see a big, £30million or £40million striker come in?

“I have said before that top teams need top strikers to win top trophies. Newcastle need that right now.

“Let’s see who they get through the door because I am sure that someone will arrive before the window shuts and there is loads of time left.”

Maddison scored 12 Premier League goals during 2021-22, more than any Newcastle player.

Wilson only managed to score eight across the whole season as he made 18 Premier League appearances due to his injury troubles.
