Newcastle United told to sign eight players after 'big' Bruno Guimaraes reveal - Campbell

Newcastle United are eight players “top-class” players away from challenging at the top of the Premier League, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Eddie Howe needs to strengthen through the spine and at the top end of the pitch.

The Magpies lost 1-0 to Liverpool at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

Speaking to Daily Mail (2 May), Bruno Guimaraes claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side are on “another level.”

The Brazilian added that Newcastle United aspire to be as “big” as Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

When asked how far the Magpies are off of the Premier League’s elite, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “It is all about recruitment.

“They have improved a lot under Eddie Howe. They are a decent side now but they are nowhere near Liverpool and City. They don’t have the firepower.

“If you litter that Newcastle side with talent at the top end of the pitch and through the spine of the team, then you’re in business. I think they need seven or eight player until they can get to a stage where they are challenging. That is for starters.

“Kieran Trippier and Guimaraes could play at the top level but there’s questions marks in other positions when you’re comparing them to the likes of Liverpool and City.

“Shelvey is a good player but he has never been at the top-level consistently. If they want to compete.”
