Newcastle United told to sign ‘next Kieran Trippier’ after source’s ‘cut-price’ reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Luke Shaw could become a “better player” if he were to play under Eddie Howe’s stewardship at Newcastle.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Magpies will be eager to sign the 27-year-old after the success of fellow England international Kieran Trippier’s arrival.

Sources told Football Insider on 7 October that Newcastle are keeping tabs on Shaw’s situation at Man United as he prepares to enter the final 18 months of his contract.

United could be tempted by a cut-price offer in January despite holding the option to extend his stay at Old Trafford by 12 months.

Current first-choice option Matt Targett only signed in the summer but Shaw is regarded as an upgrade by the Magpies’ recruitment team.

Trippier, who signed from Atletico Madrid in the January window, has registered three goals and two assists in 17 appearances for his new side.

Whelan insisted the signing of Shaw would be an “exciting” one for Newcastle.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s one of the positions that Erik ten Hag is pondering over.

“He’s thinking about possibly signing another full-back, he doesn’t know who the best option is.

“I think with the way they did it with Trippier, bringing in that experience and quality – they’ll be happy to repeat that success.

“It’s down to the manager as well. I think if you get him playing under Eddie Howe, he’d become a better player.

“It’d be exciting, it makes sense – and having that kind of experience is invaluable for a club like Newcastle.”
