Newcastle United told to strike Sven Botman deal 'quickly' amid new Italy claim - pundit
Noel Whelan has urged Newcastle to hand long-term target Sven Botman an “attractive package” to avoid losing him to AC Milan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it is the time that key behind-the-scenes figures “earn their corn” in negotiations.
As reported by The Telegraph (13 June), Newcastle are set to issue an ultimatum to Lille after the French side raised their demands for Botman, 22.
The report claims the Ligue 1 club have reportedly changed their mind about accepting a £30million bid and are now demanding £36million.
Italian outlet Gazetta dello Sport also claim (15 June) that Botman is keener on joining Serie A champions AC Milan over Newcastle.
When asked if it was time for Newcastle to increase their offer to avoid being gazumped by Milan, he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “It is, yeah.

“You can’t waste any time and allow other teams to swoop in.
“As soon as word of that interest goes out, there will always be attention raised.
“They’ve got to move quickly now and get something done. This is where people in certain areas behind the scenes earn their corn.
“They’ve got to nail the player down, give him an attractive package, and steal him away from other clubs.”
Botman played 32 times for Lille in the 2021-22 season as they failed to retain the Ligue 1 title.
The Netherlands Under-21 international is out of contract in June 2025.
