Newcastle United transfer news: Wyness shares ‘huge’ summer signing spree claim

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle United do not need a major squad overhaul this summer but could complete two “huge” signings.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Magpies have “huge quality” to come back from injury and suspension.

Newcastle failed to make a January signing with Financial Fair Play constraints preventing the club from spending in the mid-season window.

However, they are expected to make signings yet again in the off-season after spending heavily since the Saudi-backed takeover in 2021.

Eddie Howe has had to contend with long-term injuries to the likes of Callum Wilson, Nick Pope, Harvey Barnes and more during the 2023-24 campaign – while Sandro Tonali has been suspended for breaching gambling rules.

Nevertheless, the Magpies sit sixth in the Premier League table and are well-placed to secure Europa League qualification.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think there will be some ins and outs – but not a huge overhaul.

“But they do have some injured players to come back. We’ve all heard that returning players can be like new signings, but in Newcastle’s case – they’ve got some huge quality and depth missing through injury.

“There may be just a couple of extra key areas they need to strengthen.

“I think Eddie Howe has done a great job and the club can go forward next season with a renewed strength and a deep squad if, as expected, they get a huge signing or two.”
