Newcastle United will now pursue deal once done by Mike Ashley – Kieran Maguire
Newcastle United will pursue a controversial stadium naming rights deals despite the huge criticism aimed at former owner Mike Ashley when he oversaw a similar move.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle’s new owners will consider a naming rights deal if a new stadium is constructed.
It is understood that Newcastle owners, PiF, are currently considering options to either expand St James’ Park or build an entirely new stadium.
The Tyneside club are eager to continue their off-pitch growth and increase their revenue generation in time for new Premier League financial regulations.
A rule change in the 2025-26 season will allow Premier League clubs to spend 85 percent of their overall revenue on wages, transfer fees and agent fees.
Maguire believes a naming rights deal could also be on the cards to increase revenue, but warned that Newcastle chiefs must be careful after former owner Mike Ashley was criticised for trying to rename the stadium ‘Sports Direct Arena’.
Newcastle United will consider stadium naming rights deal
“If Newcastle do pursue a naming rights deal they must be careful,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“As we saw when Mike Ashley tried to rename the stadium, there was a fairly negative reaction from Newcastle fans.
“Fans may be more accommodating under the present regime who appear to have a lot of credit in the bank.

“It definitely is an option which will be considered and it is an option which can be completed fairly quickly.
“So as a quick fix, you could see the benefits.“
