Newcastle United will seal '£50m' signing after source's James Maddison update today - pundit
Newcastle United will strengthen their squad with a £50million signing, even if it isn’t James Maddison.
That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ hunt for a new attacker.
On Thursday (4 August), Football Insider revealed Leicester have now told Newcastle that Maddison, 25, is not for sale.
Newcastle have seen bids of £40million and £50million rejected by the Foxes in this window.
After seeing those bids rejected, McLeish is expecting Eddie Howe’s side to spend similar money on an alternative target.
“It’s going to be someone of that level, they may have to go abroad,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“They have already brought some South Americans to the club so we know they aren’t afraid to do that.
“We know who James Maddison is, everyone knows what he can do. If there is someone abroad who has that same ability that people might not have heard of, that is where they will go next.
“Someone like Maddison might be available somewhere else. But we know the money is there, if they are bidding £50million then we know they have £50million.
“That will get spent, you can be sure about that.”
Maddison scored 12 Premier League goals during 2021-22, more than any Newcastle player.
The Magpies start their 2022-23 campaign against Nottingham Forest (6 August), while the Foxes take on Brentford (7 August).
