‘Newcastle watch on terrified’ as Liverpool open door to fresh Anthony Gordon pursuit
Newcastle United may once again be fearing for the future of Anthony Gordon following the latest update in Liverpool’s pursuit of Rodrygo.
The Reds have already spent big this summer on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kirkez. However, they don’t appear to be done yet, with Sunday’s Community Shield defeat against Crystal Palace highlighting a lack of attacking depth.
Real Madrid star Rodrygo has been consistently linked with Liverpool, but having already faced competition from Arsenal, Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that Manchester City are ‘considering a move’ for the Brazilian.
City’s interest in Rodrygo follows the departure of Jack Grealish to Everton and impending moves for James McAtee and Savinho — who are targets of Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, respectively.
Newcastle facing Gordon dilemma as Liverpool face Rodrygo competition
News of Man City joining the Rodrygo race might well cause some anxiety around St. James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon is another winger consistently linked with Liverpool, and more recently, he’s been seen as an alternative target if they fail in their pursuit of Rodrygo.
Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke reported earlier this summer that Gordon could be available for as low as £75million, which is £11m short of what Real Madrid want for Rodrygo (€100m).
Liverpool have already caused Newcastle plenty of trouble this window after pinching Ekitike from under their noses and making a serious and sustained push for Alexander Isak.
Losing Gordon would be a hammer blow to Eddie Howe’s plans ahead of Newcastle’s return to the Champions League, with the England star registering 21 goals and 23 assists in 90 appearances across the last two seasons combined.
In addition to missing out on Ekitike, Newcastle have also been unsuccessful in bids to sign James Trafford and Benjamin Sesko, who joined Man City and Man United, respectively.
Newcastle must dig in over Gordon
Football Insider verdict

The start of the new Premier League season is upon us, and after winning the EFL Cup and securing a Champions League return last season, expectations are high for Newcastle.
With that in mind, now is certainly not the time to lose any key players, with the end of the transfer window also rapidly approaching.
Newcastle fans will be relieved to see their club making a stand on Isak, with O’Rourke revealing that the only way the Sweden international will be allowed to leave is if they have already secured a quality replacement.
And the same must be the case for Gordon, who was just as important to the Magpies last season.
Newcastle have already spent big on a winger this summer, bringing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest. It would be a lot to ask of them to dip into the market again for a Gordon replacement, especially at this late hour.
This is one battle the Magpies cannot afford to lose, and to that end, they’ll be quietly praying that Rodrygo becomes a Liverpool player.
