Newcastle well placed to agree £20m January signing – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle only have the capacity to spend £15-20million in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed midfielder Sean Longstaff could depart as a makeweight to raise further funds before the 3 February deadline.

Newcastle recorded losses after tax of £70.7million in 2021-22 and £73.4million in 2022-23, raising concerns around the financial situation at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have seen their transfer spending limited due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which have limited the Saudi-owned club’s rise.

Nevertheless, Eddie Howe’s side sit fifth in the Premier League table after 20 games and are 2-0 up in their League Cup semi-final against Arsenal ahead of the second leg.

Newcastle must sell to spend big money this month, says Wyness

Wyness suggested this summer will be “one to look forward to” for Newcastle fans.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It always comes back to what Newcastle spend, and they have spent big.

“They’ll have a little bit of headroom, but they’ll have to sell to spend big money in January.

“It’s going to be tight – they are looking at around £15-20million of room for deals.

“They’re managed conservatively, they’re managed well – and they’ll do what they can to bring in deals in areas they need.

“They’ve got to convert the Saudi interest into more revenue and breathing space with the PiF connections.

“They’re going to announce the stadium plans in around February, which I’ve been told are incredibly exciting.

“This January, there won’t be much movement. You might see someone like Sean Longstaff go as a makeweight to free money up.

“I think the summer will be one to look forward to. If Eddie Howe can hang on and get them back into Europe, possibly even in that fourth spot, then that would be a miracle.

“They’re poised to push on next season.”
