Newcastle well placed to agree late-January deals using ‘Alexander Isak money’
Newcastle United are one of several Premier League clubs who are yet to make a new signing in the January transfer window.
Newcastle have been restricted by the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in recent campaigns, having been forced to balance the books with the sales of young talents.
Eddie Howe has suggested PSR remains an issue for Newcastle despite spending around £240million on new signings last summer.
Meanwhile, Alexander Isak joined Liverpool in a deal worth around £125m.
Newcastle have just days left to secure a deal for any of their transfer targets, with the window set to close on 2 February.
Why Newcastle are not facing PSR issues this season
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Newcastle are making a “mistake” by not signing any players in the January window.
It isn’t the first time Howe’s side have taken this approach in the mid-season window, having decided against making new additions in January 2025.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “The bottom line is, you would think they’d be signing at least one player in the window. They seem to have passed on that.
“This window is not a PSR problem window. They’ve got the Isak profits. There’s no way that they’ve got an issue on PSR for this window, so they’ve chosen strategically not to do a deal for at least one player.
“It’s surprising, but maybe they’ll be active as the window closes and they’re looking for that opportunity to do so. But I think it’s a bit of a mistake.”
Why Newcastle should agree new signings
Borson insisted Newcastle have plenty still to play for this season due to their performances in the Champions League and standing in the Premier League table.
“I think they’ve had a great run in the Champions League,” said Borson.
“They’re generating really good money so far from it, and they’re in a decent position for Champions League football again. I think they should be doubling down.
“I think it’s very unlikely that they’ll finish lower than seventh in the Premier League, and I think they’ve got a great chance of finishing between fourth to seventh.”
Newcastle currently sit ninth in the Premier League table, but they are just four points behind fifth-place Chelsea after 23 games.
