Newcastle working on ‘six or seven’ January signings after ‘behind-the-scenes’ reveal – pundit

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will want six or seven new players in the January window, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Premier League goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 44-year-old is publicly backing his current crop of players in case moves fail to materialise next month.

Speaking to Sky Sports (19 December), Howe revealed the club were working “behind the scenes” to find “a couple of solutions” in the market.

However, he made the point that his current squad is “the biggest strength” he has in the fight against relegation.

Robinson believes the Magpies boss has a different private opinion on the matter.

“Howe has to say that,” he told Football Insider. “He is going to need these players on side if he doesn’t get the players he wants in January through the door.

“You ask Eddie Howe off the record how many players he wants in January he will probably say six or seven. But the chance of them getting six or seven players in January is slim.

“A manager cannot go on record and say he needs seven new players because that is saying the squad he has got is not good enough.

“Howe also has to get to January with this current group of players. I’m not surprised to hear him say he only wants a couple.

“Deep down I think he wants four – minimum. Looking at that squad he needs at least four if they are to stay up.”

In other news, a pundit has claimed ‘there’s no justification’ for what he saw at Newcastle as controversial footage emerges.
