Newcastle’s ‘secret’ stance on Man City revealed by top source
Newcastle United will be secretly hoping Manchester City are successful in their lawsuit against the Premier League.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed Newcastle would be allowed to spend more money if Man City come out on top in their bid to end the associated party transaction (APT) rules.
The English champions have pursued legal action against the Premier League regarding the APT rules currently in place, with the club claiming the regulations are “unlawful”.
A relaxation of the rules would mean top-flight clubs could agree sponsorship deals as high as they wanted with no challenge, increasing the amount they could spend under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Football Insider revealed Newcastle United are prepared to submit documents in support of Man City ahead of the hearing.
Reports have suggested the north-east giants are joined by fellow Premier League sides Everton and Chelsea in backing Man City as they take on the governing body.
The case is on track to be settled after a two-week private arbitration hearing starting on Monday (10 June).
Newcastle could bypass PSR rules if Man City win case
Newcastle have been toeing the financial fair play (FFP) line throughout the past few transfer windows and have been at risk of being forced to sell some of their best players.
Football Insider previously revealed the Tyneside club will need to sell one of their stars this summer to avoid breaching the Premier League’s spending rules.
There has been increased interest around the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak recently, with Football Insider revealing Arsenal have added the Swedish striker to a four-man shortlist of potential forward signings.

O’Rourke suggested ending the APT rules would put Newcastle in with a better chance of keeping hold of their star players and potentially close the gap on the sides at the top of the Premier League.
It could also allow PIF to secure more lucrative commercial deals in Saudi Arabia, ensuring the ownership group can pump more money into the club through its own resources.
In other news, a new update has emerged on the future of Bruno Guimaraes.
