Nick Pope: Pundit suggests real motive behind Newcastle United move

Frank McAvennie expects Nick Pope to oust Martin Dubravka as first choice goalkeeper at Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said that Pope’s move to St. James’ Park is a “no brainer” for the player.

As reported by Sky Sports ( 22 June), Nick Pope will undergo a medical on Tyneside on Thursday after a deal was agreed with Burnley.

Dubravka has been the Magpies’ number one since his arrival from Sparta Prague in 2018.

However, McAvennie suggested money and England prospects are the two reasons behind Pope’s prospective move.

“Pope wants to go to the World Cup,” he told Football Insider.

“I would think he’s going there to be number one for that reason. He will also be going to Newcastle because he’s getting more money there than he will anywhere else, let’s be honest.

“But he’ll also get the chance to be part of something. Burnley was just stay up, that was their goal.

“He’s going to Newcastle and he’s going to be part this journey that Newcastle are going to go on.

“Some people don’t realise the journey that’s about to happen for them. It’s going to take them a few years to challenge for the league – the same thing happened with Man City.

“Newcastle have got good players coming in now, next year it will be better players and the following year even better players and that’s when they’ll start to challenge for it.

“Pope has got the chance to start at the beginning and see this progression like Joe Hart did at Man City.

“And I think it’s a good signing for them as well. I still believe every big club needs two top class goalkeepers.

“And Pope wants to try and stamp his authority and get number one for Newcastle and England and I think it’s a no-brainer.”
