Nico Gonzalez to Man City: Finance expert issues ‘really odd’ update

Man City signing Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez in a deadline day move appears to make no sense, according to Stefan Borson.

City are in the market for a new midfielder, having lost Rodri for the rest of the season, and summer signing Ilkay Gundogan has struggled.

The Sky Blues have identified Gonzalez as a target, and have made an approach [Daily Mail] for the former Barcelona midfielder.

The talented midfielder has a release clause of around £50million but City are hoping to strike a deal for less than that, something that Borson has questioned as “really odd” on X due to the midfielder’s importance at Porto.

Borson had also pointed out in a prior post on X, that the Portuguese side no longer need to sell anybosy for less than their release clause after Galeno moved to Al-Ahli.

Man City target Nico Gonzalez would be a brilliant signing in January

Football Insider Verdict

James McAtee may be on his way out of Man City, Paul Robinson has exclusively told Football Insider, and his departure would make signing a new creative midfielder a priority.

Gonzalez is exactly that, capable of playing in a deeper-holding role or further up the pitch, the former Barcelona man has excelled since his move to Portugal.

Having come through the esteemed La Masia academy, Gonzalez broke into the Barcelona team in the 2021/22 season, playing 27 times in La Liga.

Gonzalez then spent a season on loan at Valencia in the 2022/23 season, before making the bold move to leave the La Liga giants, and move across the border.

Man City have struggled without Balon D’or winner Rodri this season.

The Spanish U21 international would fit seamlessly into Pep Guardiola’s side, given his calmness on the ball, and natural ability at playing in tight spaces.

The Spaniard’s efficiency has improved from last season, Gonzalez has registered seven goals and five assists from central midfield this year.
