Nigel Spink has delivered a no-holds-barred verdict on Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack by calling him “an absolute disgrace” to the club and its supporters.

Former Villa goalkeeper Spink described the actions of McCormack as “an absolute joke” after he failed to turn up to training last week.

The 30-year-old star was lambasted for his attitude and fitness by his manager Steve Bruce after the draw against Preston at the weekend.

McCormack was left out of the squad for that fixture and Bruce revealed that the senior player was absent because he missed training earlier on in the week because of his faulty gates.

The news of McCormack’s behaviour did not go down well with club legend, Spink, who did not hold back when providing his assessment of the player.

“This is an absolute joke that a player on that sort of money can treat the club, the supporters like he has treated them,” Spink’s told BBC Radio West Midlands.

“This is several occasions that this has happened and it is an absolute disgrace.

“Di Matteo and his recruitment people, again, we are looking at the same mistakes being made at the club.

“I’m just flabbergasted again, I talked about how it would take four transfer windows after relegation to put that squad right, I think we have wasted one from the summer already.”

Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked by the club in October, purchased McCormack from Fulham for a then Championship transfer record of £12million.

The Italian made nine signings during the summer transfer window, including two recording breaking deals in McCormack and Jonathan Kodjia.

Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini was another addition, but he has already made a January loan switch to Atlanta after several poor performances for the senior side.

Additionally, it now looks like McCormack’s time at Villa Park could be coming to an end as he is currently training with the under-23s.

He has scored only three goals all season and could be the second of Di Matteo’s signing heading for the exit door after just six months in the Midlands.
