Football Insider names the West Ham flop of the year for 2016.
Simone Zaza his West Ham’s biggest flop in a year where the club have fallen drastically down the Premier League table.
The 25-year-old began the year quite well, scoring goals for Juventus’ first-team, and earning a spot in Italy’s final 23-man squad for the European Championships in France during the summer.
However, it has all gone horribly wrong for Zaza since the Euros, and he now finds himself on the brink of a January exit from the London club.
Many football fans still remember Zaza’s horrific penalty miss that saw Italy exit the competition at the hands of Germany in the quarter-finals, but he had a chance to redeem himself when he signed for West Ham in the summer.
Zaza agreed to join the Hammers on a season-long loan from Juventus, with an option to sign a permanent deal if he were to impress his new employers.
However, Zaza has been a major disappointment under Slaven Bilic, and has failed to find the back of the net in 11 appearances in all competitions. It has been a disaster from day one.
The Italy international has had many opportunities to impress, given the long-term injuries to both Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll, but has been so much of a flop that West Ham now want to terminate his deal next month.
Due to the clause agreed in his loan contract, West Ham are required to buy him permanently for £20 million if he makes one more appearance for the club, which is something they are trying to avoid doing at all costs.
The Hammers are prepared to cut their losses on Zaza in favour of signing a new goalscorer that can help them in their relegation battle.
West Ham are currently 13th in the league having won their last two games, but they began the month just a point clear of the relegation zone with just three league wins to their name.
In other West Ham news, BBC pundit Jermaine Jenas slammed the Hammers despite their win over Hull at the weekend.
