Manager makes admission about future of midfielder after Rangers approach is confirmed

Hamilton manager Martin Canning has revealed “no deal is close” between Rangers and Accies for 21-year-old midfielder Greg Docherty.
The Gers reportedly had a £300,000 bid thrown out last week as manager Graeme Murty rebuilds the squad he inherited from Pedro Caixinha in October.
Murty confirmed he had made an approach for the Scotland Under-21 international.
The Ibrox giants have made five signings so far this month as Jason Cummings, Jamie Murphy, Sean Goss and Russell Martin have arrived on loan while Declan John completed a permanent move from Cardiff City.
Canning revealed Docherty is in his plans for this weekend’s Scottish Cup tie and admitted the club wouldn’t stand in Docherty’s way if the Gers met their valuation.
“I don’t get involved in the business side of things but from what I’ve been told there’s no deal close at the minute,” said Canning, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“My plan for the weekend is that Greg will be here and will play. Until I get a phone call saying he’s away to speak to whoever that would change things, but until a fair valuation has been met, it’s business as usual.
“You want to keep your strongest players here, but we also know as a club that if guys come through our academy and do well they deserve their move.
“We’ve always said if you come through here and do the business then somebody else wants to take you then – as long as the fair value is met – we will pat you on the back and wish you well. We want guys to go on and further their careers.”
The 21-year-old has made 25 appearances this season for Martin Canning’s side, scoring three times and contributing six assists, to help them to ninth place in the Scottish Premiership.
The Scotland Under-21 international has made over 100 club appearances in total with Accies believed to be happy to settle for £600,000.
Rangers return to action after the three-week winter break when they travel to Highland League minnows Fraserburgh in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
The midfielder has represented Scotland at Under-17 and Under-21 level and was part of Scot Gemmill’s squad frot he last round of European Under-21 Championship qualifiers in October.
In other Rangers news, this £50,000-a-week forward eager to move to Ibrox is within 48 hours of a switch.
