‘No doubt’ – Man United considering reigniting interest in Premier League star after collapse

Ruben Amorim has endured another difficult start to the season at Man United and is fighting for his job amid ongoing calls for his head.

Amorim‘s side have won just two of their first six Premier League games so far and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby.

However, the boss is already planning to enter the transfer market to improve his squad in a desperate attempt to turn around their fortunes.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 30 September that Amorim wants to sign a new goalkeeper despite having signed Senne Lammens.

As a result, United have now been backed to turn their attentions back to Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez after failing with efforts to sign him in the summer.

Man United backed to return with new Emiliano Martinez offer

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 23 September that Martinez could push to leave Aston Villa if their poor start to the season does not turn around.

The goalkeeper was keen on a move to Man United during the summer, while Amorim had considered him his number-one target to replace Andre Onana.

That is according to former United chief scout Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during their most successful period, as he exclusively told Football Insider that that deal could now be reignited either in January or next summer.

I’m still surprised they didn’t get Martinez,” he told Football Insider.

“They wanted him, he wanted the move, but at the end of the day they couldn’t come to an agreement with Villa so the deal collapsed.

“They’ve gone and got Lammens now, but Amorim has been saying he still wants a goalkeeper, so the recruitment team will be looking at their options.

“I have no doubt Martinez is still one of those, because he’s a top-class goalkeeper and one who would immediately solve the issues they’ve had recently.

“He’s strong, imposing, a top shot-stopper and a character in the dressing room which it feels like they’re sorely lacking at Man United at the moment.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them go back in for him, especially with the manager still demanding a goalkeeper, whether that’s in January or next summer.”

Brown told Football Insider on 22 August that Man United would miss out on signing Martinez in what could be a “huge mistake” by Amorim’s side.

Martinez was ‘disappointed’ not to join Man United

Following the transfer deadline, Brown told Football Insider that Martinez was “disappointed” not to join Man United as the 33-year-old had his heart set on the move.

Unai Emery has since reintegrated him into his first-team plans at Villa Park, with all parties keen to get on with the task at hand despite the summer frustrations.

The goalkeeper’s future has now been put on the back burner with no suggestions he could depart in January despite potential renewed interest.

Football Insider revealed in August that Emery had no plans to let Martinez leave despite his departure having been seen as “inevitable” earlier in the summer.

However, the goalkeeper’s desire to move on in the summer had been made clear despite his eventual decision to stay, and an offer from United could tempt him again.
