Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has got a “monkey off his back” by scoring against Bristol City last weekend, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds hitman and lifelong supporter was left raving over the performance of 25-year-old, insisting his display versus the Robins showed everything expected of a centre forward.
Bamford was joined by Pablo Hernandez and Jack Harrison on the scoresheet in their 3-1 win, Leeds making a perfect start to their season to sit top of the Championship after one game.
Whelan said that Bamford was excellent considering his poor pre-season and potential lack of confidence, insisting his header will boost his belief going into Saturday’s clash against Nottingham Forest.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Patrick, I thought his performance last week was outstanding. Considering the pre-season that he’s had, knowing that strikers thrive off performances with goals for confidence, he managed to do that.
“Every bit of a centre forward was there last week; his strength, chasing balls down into the corners, making bad balls into good balls, winning corners he had no right to that, just that passion and hard work to put defenders under pressure.
“Most importantly he got the goal and that will do him the world of good. You could see the relief and the monkey off his back.”
Bamford’s first season at Elland Road was hit by injuries as he managed to score 10 goals in just 25 appearances following his move from Middlesbrough.
He is now the most senior striker at Marcelo Bielsa’s disposal, with Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah joining on deadline day after Kemar Roofe departed for Anderlecht.
In other Leeds United news, Football Insider can reveal the club have agreed a deal totalling £4million for one of their new signings.
