'No secret' - Exclusive: Whelan reacts to big Kinnear player update that's thrilled Leeds fans
Noel Whelan has claimed Jean-Kevin Augustin will be third choice at Leeds United when the season resumes despite the comments of Angus Kinnear.
The ex-Whites and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested Marcelo Bielsa should stick with the “tried and tested” Patrick Bamford for the remainder of the season.
Angus Kinnear, the club’s managing director, has got Leeds fans excited by claiming in the Yorkshire Evening Post how there’s a growing belief Augustin “will have a critical part to play in the run-in.”
Augustin has mustered a mere three substitute appearances since arriving on loan from RB Leipzig in January due mainly to fitness issues.
However, the unscheduled mid-season break has presented an opportunity for the 22-year-old to get into top condition and have an impact on the remainder of the campaign.
When asked by Football Insider if Marcelo Bielsa would hand the big-money January arrival an extended chance to impress, Whelan said: “There is no secret. Patrick Bamford is number one. You go with your tried and tested – at the moment Patrick is doing the job.

“Then there is Tyler Roberts in the wing who did very well at Hull. At the moment he is sitting there as the third-choice. He will have to fight and work his way into the reckoning because right now there are players that are well ahead of him.
“You have to make sure he is right. He has lost the weight because, if not, you are going to have another injury on your hands. It will be back to square one.
“I would suggest sticking with tried and tested right now.”
Football Insider has been told that Leeds are confident Augustin will be a matchwinning force when the season resumes.
Talks are taking place behind the scenes about the Championship returning in mid-June, if possible, with Leeds nine games away from securing promotion.
