Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has said that Tottenham need to have Harry Kane fit and ready if they are to stand a chance of securing a positive result against Manchester United on Saturday.
The England striker hobbled off the pitch with minutes to play in their impressive 4-1 win over Liverpool having bagged a brace, and played no part in their 3-2 defeat at home to West Ham in the League Cup on Wednesday.
Speaking after the game Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that his star striker was an injury doubt for Saturday’s clash, and Merson has said that if Kane does manage to appear against Jose Mourinho’s side, there is no way that Spurs will lose.
He says that Tottenham would probably take a draw against their fellow title challengers, but insists he does not see United being aggressive enough to secure victory.
Predicting a 1-1 draw between the two sides, Merson told Sky Sports on their website: “It’s no surprise but the West Ham defeat proved it, Tottenham are a different team without Harry Kane.
“They really need his hamstring to be OK this weekend. If Kane plays on Saturday I don’t think they will lose the game.
“United need to take the game to Tottenham and I’m not sure they can do that. Spurs would probably take a draw but their away record has been phenomenal recently.
“If Mauricio Pochettino’s team really have aspirations of winning the title themselves, this is a fixture they need to win.”
Both United and Spurs sit level on 20 points in second and third in the Premier League table respectively, so both teams will know how much of a boost three points would be to their title aspirations.
However they both find themselves five points behind league leaders Manchester City, who are yet to taste defeat this season, so defeat could see either team drift eight points adrift if the Citizens see off West Brom on Saturday.
