‘Not a good idea’ – Exclusive: Bent unimpressed as Celtic left floundering

Darren Bent has said “it was not a good idea” to play internationals in October after Celtic had four players missing for their Old Firm clash with Rangers due to coronavirus.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker said he understood that the games were necessary money earners for countries.

Neil Lennon was without star striker Odsonne Edouard who tested positive for the virus while away with France under-21s and only left self-isolation on Thursday.

Israeli pair Nir Bitton and Hatem Elhamed also tested positive while on international duty and missed the game.

Ryan Christie was in self-isolation after coming into close contact with former Hoops teammate Stuart Armstrong, who tested positive for the virus, while on Scotland duty.

Celtic fielded a side that included eight Old Firm debutants for their game against Rangers on Saturday.

A brace from Connor Goldson ensured Rangers won the first meeting between the teams of the season 2-0.

Asked by Football Insider whether it was right to play the internationals considering the coronavirus pandemic, Bent said: “It’s pretty hard not to.

“Internationals generate big money and countries need to play games so it’s difficult.

“You could say we shouldn’t have them but in that respect, it’s a little bit tough.

“With everything around Covid, you’d probably say it was not a good idea to have internationals but I guess how can you bet against it?”

Lennon confirmed after the game that Edouard, Bitton and Elhamed are a doubt for the Hoops’ Europa League game against AC Milan on Thursday night.

Christie meanwhile should be available for the visit of the Italian giants.

In other Celtic news, a major update on Odsonne Edouard can be revealed after contract talks.
