Noel Whelan has claimed versatile Leeds United star Ezgjan Alioski was exposed at left-back against Chelsea on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds forward and boyhood Whites fan insisted the 28-year-old has been “excellent” this season but was “not good enough” at Stamford Bridge.
Alioski began his Leeds career as a winger but has been converted into a left-back in recent seasons, a role he has shared with Stuart Dallas this term.
The Yorkshire giants have won just one of the four games he started at left-back this season, according to Transfermarkt.
Asked by Football Insider whether Alioski was exposed at left-back in their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, Whelan said: “Yes, he did.
“From the games where we saw him beforehand I thought he was excellent but on Saturday against Chelsea you’re looking at different opposition and you’ve got to look at the players he’s playing against.
“They had £260million sat on the bench, that’s where they are at. We’re a growing club, we’re rebuilding.
“But for Alioski, he’s going to get that against Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City. It’s a different level of player you’re coming up against and there were quite a few people who were not good enough in the second half at all.
“They stepped up the game, good players and teams do that. We just couldn’t cope with their intensity, their disciple in defence. They matched up to us, man on man and hit us hard with their quality and pace.”
