Noel Whelan revealed to Football Insider how “devastated” the Leeds United players were in the aftermath of the team’s Easter weekend defeats to Brentford and Wigan Athletic.
United’s automatic promotion hopes are all but over following consecutive Championship defeats that are likely to condemn them to a third-placed finish.
Whelan was at Griffin Park on Bank Holiday Monday and Elland Road on Good Friday to witness two abject displays that means the club are set to be condemned to the end-of-season play-offs.
Emotions were running high as the final whistle blew on a long weekend that is certain to extend the club’s campaign until the end of May.
“The boys looked absolutely demoralised after losing to Wigan, they were all slumped on the floor, as they knew what a massive game it was,” Whelan said to Football Insider.
“The body language was the same after losing to Brentford. They knew a huge chance has slipped through their fingers and they were devastated. It’s not nice to see, but they’ll have to bounce back.
“Brentford was always going to be really tough, they have played us off the park there the last few times, and they are really strong at home.”
United have 82 points from 44 matches, three adrift of second-placed Sheffield United, who can also count on a far superior goal difference.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side are next in action on Sunday, when they face Aston Villa, who are on a remarkable run of 10 consecutive wins.
In other Leeds United team news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on signing two Liverpool players who have dazzled this season.
