Noel Whelan has ripped into Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts after his poor performance against Hull City in the League Cup.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker claims the 21-year-old looked “uninterested” and did not show the required work rate on Wednesday night.
Roberts was one of a handful of senior players named among the starting XI as Marcelo Bielsa made 11 changes to the side which lost to Liverpool in the league.
An injury-time equaliser from Ezgjan Alioski saw the game go to penalties but the League One side were able to hold their nerve and knock out the Whites.
Whelan, who was in attendance at Elland Road, has blasted Roberts for his display and has questioned how low the attacker’s confidence must be after an uninspiring performance.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Tyler Roberts looked so uninterested, his touch wasn’t good, his movement was poor, he just didn’t look like he was actually enjoying the game.
“I know he wasn’t playing well but you’ve got to have an appetite when things aren’t going right with your touch, you’ve got to work hard, you’ve got to sprint, you’ve got to look interested in a game.
“He just wasn’t at all dynamic while he was out there and making things happen like a number 10 should. He wasn’t getting into the right areas, he wasn’t getting on the ball to make things happen – he looked low on confidence. I’m not sure he broke into a sprint at any stage.”
Roberts played 23 times for Leeds last season as the Whites stormed their way to the Championship title.
He also came off the bench at Anfield last weekend to play 28 minutes of the 4-3 defeat.
