‘Nothing I can do’ – Tottenham star makes desperate plea as he delivers bold Poch verdict
Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane has made a desperate plea for the second goal against Stoke City to be awarded to him instead of Christian Eriksen.
The strike, which helped seal a 2-1 win for Mauricio Pochettino and his men, was the object of much scrutiny both during and after the game, with both the English and Danish internationals celebrating as if they had scored.
Eriksen had delivered the free kick which Kane attacked, and it drifted into the far side of the net to give Spurs a 2-0 lead – although no one was quite sure who the goal should be awarded to.
Now Kane has insisted it was him, swearing on his daughter’s life he got a touch, but is also focusing on their next game against Manchester City, boldly stating that if any manager can get the team ready for such a massive clash, Pochettino is that man.
He was quoted by the Mirror as saying: “I swear on my daughter’s life that I touched the ball, but there’s nothing I can do.
“If they can turn it around, they can turn it around. If they take my word, they take my word.
“Now it is important we finish strong and we’ve got a big game against Man City next.
“We’ve got to make sure we don’t take our foot off the gas and the gaffer is very good at that, motivating the players and making sure we stay on it.”
Football Insider verdict
The fact that Kane is so desperate to have the goal put in his name signifies just how much he loves to score, and maybe the minor injustice will drive him on to prove himself against Manchester City. This sort of inter-team rivalry is only healthy, as everyone will be lifting their game to try and keep pace with the best, but it is clear to see there is also massive respect for all the talents at Spurs from their teammates. As for Pochettino, he has the opportunity to seal his place as one of the best managers in the Premier League right now if he can pull off a victory against a Manchester City side destined to seal the top flight title, and he will be relying on Kane to bang home the goals to pick up all three points.
