Nuno Espirito Santo sack odds slashed after ‘outrageous’ West Ham developments

Nuno Espirito Santo’s appointment at West Ham has not gone to plan, with the former Nottingham Forest boss on track to relegate the Hammers.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Fulham has left the East London club 18th, five points off safety with a vastly inferior goal difference.

West Ham have been dire so far this season, and it is no surprise that the Hammers find themselves in this current situation.

However, Nuno was brought in to pull the club out of the bottom three, and after 12 games in charge, he has only managed two victories.

As a result, Nuno continues to get closer to the sack at the London Stadium, despite being only appointed months ago.

Nuno Espirito Santo third-favourite to be sacked next in the Premier League

Overall, West Ham were pretty unlucky to lose to Fulham on Saturday.

A late Raul Jimenez goal proved to be the difference to condemn the Hammers to yet another defeat at the London Stadium.

Watching the match on Sky Sports News on 28 December, Michael Dawson was quick to suggest that this came against the run of play.

When discussing the goal, he said: “It’s outrageous, outrageous, West Ham do not deserve to be behind, but they are, and it’s a mistake. They defended so well all game – it comes down the right-hand side, Harry Wilson puts a ball into the box, it’s headed out, Ollie Scarles goes to clear it but misses.

“It comes back to Wilson, who puts the ball back in, and Raul Jimenez is there. West Ham do not deserve this, but it sums them up where they are in the Premier League; they had enough chances to win, yet they trail.”

Nevertheless, the defeat leaves the Hammers in a difficult situation, at a time when West Ham are already expected to be relegated this season.

As a result, Nuno is now the third-favourite to be sacked next in the Premier League this season.

The manager is just 11/2 to be given the boot next, with Scott Parker the favourite at 3/1, and Thomas Frank next at 11/4.

What did Nuno say after the Fulham defeat?

It’s safe to say that morale was low after the defeat to Fulham.

The match was no doubt seen as one of several winnable games the Hammers had between now and their FA Cup tie before a tricky run of fixtures.

Now, West Ham are seven matches without a victory in the Premier League, a terrible trend that currently has no end in sight.

Speaking to BBC’s Match of the Day on 27 December, Nuno was quick to rue the Hammers’ missed chances in the defeat.

He stated: “It [the goal] comes after some chances we had in the second half, we have been punished by a mistake and we lose the game.

“Everybody cares, it’s not about that but about the situation we are in. Everything bad happens to us. You can argue about the justice of the result, but the reality is we lost after what I think was an equal first half, both teams didn’t have much.

“Second half – we had the momentum, created situations we should have scored from, and in the end we were punished.

“We have to react, the good part is we play another game in two days time. It’s another chance to give back to our fans.

“When you don’t score you are never totally comfortable.”
