Noel Whelan is convinced Kalvin Phillips can be a Premier League star – either at Leeds United or another club if they miss out on promotion.
The central midfielder has been transformed into a midfield anchorman who can also fill in at centre-back by Marcelo Bielsa and responded with comfortably the best season of his career.
The Leeds-supporting academy product was named in the Championship team of the season last week and will be a key player for the club in what is likely to be a nervy promotion run-in.
Asked if Phillips has the qualities to shine in the English top flight, ex-Elland Road striker Whelan exclusively told Football Insider: “Oh my God, yes. Hopefully, that will be at Leeds. I hate to envisage the alternative, because I don’t want another club to sign him if we don’t get promoted.
“That lad can definitely go on to big things – England caps, hundreds of Premier League appearances, there’s no doubt about that.
“He has been superb and so consistent this season. He’s the sort of player worth his weight in gold – aggressive, disciplined, with a wide range of passing.”
Phillips, 23, has a contract at Leeds that runs until the summer of 2021 after signing a new deal when Andrea Radrizzani took over as owner two years ago.
He has made 40 appearances for the Whites this season, including 38 league starts, two-thirds of which have been in defensive midfield and the other third at centre-back.
In other Leeds United transfer news, Noel Whelan has slaughtered SEVEN of the club’s senior players as “not talented enough” and who must be “got off the payroll”.
