Oliver Skipp is perfect for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham system – ex-coach

Oliver Skipp would “suit” Ange Postecoglou’s style of play at Tottenham.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Saul Isaksson-Hurst, a long-standing former Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal coach of 18 years and who now runs his own business coaching Premier League stars, claimed the midfielder has the attributes to thrive under the Australian.

Skipp, 23, joined Spurs’ academy in 2008 and has since made 102 senior appearances, but he has been on the peripheries of the squad this season.

The defensive midfielder has struggled to earn a spot in Postecoglou’s starting line-up over the likes of Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma and has made just four league starts – a major reduction from his appearances last season.

Oliver Skipp ‘one of the strongest’ young Tottenham stars

Isaksson-Hurst, who trained Skipp during his six-year spell as an academy coach between 2006 and 2012, was adamant that the Englishman’s ball-retention ability and strength make him suitable for Spurs’ current philosophy.

“Skipp was always one of the strongest in the group,” he told the Inside Track podcast.

“He had great technical skills, was very intelligent and has a really high football IQ, and a generally high IQ as well.

“He’s a very clever young man.

“He definitely stood out and worked really hard.

“Physically, he was good as well in terms of his size – not necessarily the quickest at the time, but he was always one of the strongest.

“I think he suits the style of play that Postecoglou is trying to implement.

“He’s very good on the ball and likes to play, so I think all modern-day managers who want to keep the ball need players who can play under pressure and play forward.

“Skippy is really good at that.”
