Ollie Watkins: Pundit issues ‘huge’ Aston Villa claim after Steven Gerrard comments on ‘noise’
Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Steven Gerrard for his “huge” impact at Aston Villa after Saturday’s win over Brighton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper insisted “it was only a matter of time” before the quality of Villa’s forward players shone through.
Ollie Watkins ended a seven game goal drought on Saturday as the Claret and Blues won 2-0 at the Amex Stadium.
It ended a torrid run of results for Steven Gerrard’s side which included defeats against relegation-threatened Newcastle United and Watford.
Speaking to club media (26 February), Gerrard hailed Watkins for his performance after “a lot of noise” regarding the striker’s form.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Watkins goal, Robinson said: “It was only a matter of time.
“When you look at the quality of the players behind Watkins and [Danny] Ings, the likes of [Emiliano] Buendia and [Philippe] Coutinho, there is a hell of a lot of quality there.
“I never saw it as a huge issue for them. I knew the goals would come it was just a matter of when they did.
“Steven Gerrard has had a huge impact since taking over if you look at where they were when he started. It’s easy to forget where they were.
“It is far from worrying times for Aston Villa. They are looking up the table not at what’s behind them.”
