Ollie Watkins, Virgil van Dijk react to Joe Gomez’s ‘special’ message at Liverpool

Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk reacted to a message from Joe Gomez on social media after beating Tottenham 5-1.

Liverpool were crowned champions of England on Sunday (27 April) thanks to their win over Spurs, condemning Ange Postecoglou’s side to their 19th loss of a miserable season.

However, that will have mattered little to Arne Slot, who joined bosses such as Leeds target Jose Mourinho and the soon-to-be Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti as one of only six managers to win the Premier League in their first season in England.

The Dutch manager capitalised on both Arsenal and Man City enduring underwhelming seasons, stealing an early march on both and confirming the title with four games to spare.

Joe Gomez sends ‘special’ message to Liverpool fans

Following the win over Tottenham, Gomez shared several images to Instagram from the day’s celebrations, captioned: “20. Special”.

The post was then liked by Liverpool captain Van Dijk and exit-linked Villa striker Watkins, with both sharing their support for the defender who has struggled with injuries.

Joe Gomez faces uncertain Anfield future with one year left on contract

Football Insider Verdict

Gomez has just one year remaining on the contract extension the former Charlton man penned in 2022.

Contract expiry dates have dominated Liverpool this season, with both Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk penning two-year deals recently, although Trent Alexander-Arnold seems likely to move to Real Madrid come the expiration of his contract in the summer.

There is no doubt that the Gomez is remarkably talented, but injuries have inhibited his ability to feature regularly this season.

Having appeared 32 times last campaign in the Premier League, Gomez has started just six games under Slot this time round.

With just a year left to prove himself to his manager, the 27-year-old’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain and the Reds may let their longest-serving player go in favour of renewing other stars such as Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley.
