Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce

Alan Hutton insists that Ryan Fraser is “one of the best” free signings that Newcastle United could have possibly made this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Aston Villa and Scotland full-back believes his old manager Steve Bruce has pulled off a real coup with the winger’s capture.

Newcastle confirmed on Monday that the 26-year-old had put pen to paper on a five-year deal after he left Bournemouth at the end of his contract with the Cherries.

Hutton admits he loved watching his fellow Scot dazzle during the 2018/19 campaign and that he hopes Fraser can replicate his form at St James’ Park.

Asked how good a signing Fraser is on a free, Hutton told Football Insider: “Oh, it’s got to be one of the best when you think about it. Was it two seasons ago it was probably his best season? He was brilliant.

“He looked so confident, he was flying, loads of pace, scoring goals, setting up goals, it was great to watch from my point of view for Scotland. He’s a great signing for them.

“I think they’ve done really well in the transfer so hopefully he can get back down to some of his performances from the other season.”

Fraser scored seven goals and contributed 14 assists in 38 Premier League appearances during the 2018/19 season.

However, he struggled to find the same form last term and scored just once and set up a further four for his teammates as Bournemouth were relegated.

In other Newcastle United news, it can be revealed the club have agreed £45million transfer terms.
