O’Rourke drops major update on Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United future

Newcastle United bosses expect Eddie Howe to lead the club to European qualification this season, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies have dropped to 11th in the Premier League after following last week’s 2-0 defeat against West Ham with a 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace on Saturday (30 November).

However, Newcastle are just four points adrift of the top four after 13 games in the 2024-25 campaign.

Sources say the club’s ambitious owners want the club to return to European football next term.

It is believed a top-seven finish is seen as key for Newcastle’s project going forward and will also be a progressive step for Howe and his future at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have kept Howe’s contract length under wraps but it has been reported that his deal on Tyneside runs until June 2027.

Despite their expectations for the season, it is believed the ownership are also understanding of the injury problems Howe has faced so far this term.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson have both struggled to play regularly, while Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are yet to return from long-term knee injury layoffs.

Newcastle have already beaten Tottenham and Arsenal this term and also drew against defending champions Man City in September.

The Magpies played Champions League football last term but failed to emerge from the group stage.

Howe’s side achieved a seventh-place finish in the Premier League but were denied European qualification due to Man United’s FA Cup win and poor performance from English clubs in the coefficient rankings.

Newcastle are next in action against runaway league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday (4 December).
