Noel Whelan has urged Victor Orta to “listen” to Marcelo Bielsa this summer as they turn their attention to strengthening the Leeds United squad.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker explained why there must be clear thinking at the top and total harmony between the manager and the director of football.
Orta has a hit-and-miss signings record since taking charge of the club’s recruitment in the summer of 2017, including mixed results from those brought in since Bielsa was appointed last summer.
Leeds’ summer transfer strategy is focused on “quality” loan signings and free transfer but that could dramatically change following a twist today, as owner Andrea Radrizzani held takeover talks with PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi in Doha.
“It’s important Mr Orta listens to Mr Bielsa,” Whelan told Football Insider. “The manager should be choosing who he wants going into his squad and who he wants going out of the squad.
“It is the job of the director of football to identify the players and handle the negotiations, with the manager having the final say over who comes in and out.
“Mr Orta has to listen. There is no point getting a player who the manager doesn’t want. It needs to be loan signings from Premier League who have a bit of quality.”
Leeds signed Kiko Casilla on a free transfer from Real Madrid in January after six senior recruits last summer, four of who came on loan from Chelsea and Manchester City.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that a Whites ace is quitting after agreeing a £13,000-a-week contract with a new club.
