Ossie Ardiles has lauded Mauricio Pochettino and his Tottenham players after they earned a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough.

Harry Kane scored a 58th-minute penalty against Aitor Karanka’s side to secure the three points as the north London outfit struggled to break Boro’s sturdy defence down.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, former Spurs player and manager Ardiles described the narrow victory as a “crucial” triumph to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea.

Spurs secured victory after South Korea international Heung-Min Son went down in the penalty are under the challenge of defender Bernardo Espinosa.

Referee Mark Clattenburg pointed to the spot, which Kane duly dispatched to score his 16th goal in just 23 league and cup appearances this season.

Pochettino’s side are now Chelsea’s main threat after Liverpool were humiliated by relegation strugglers Hull City, with Marco Silva’s side winning by two goals to nil.

Spurs will now be looking to compound Liverpool fans’s misery at White Hart Lane on Saturday, as they look to stretch the gap between themselves and Jurgen Klopp’s side.
