Paul Robinson was blown away by Wolves attacker Adama Traore during the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday as he claimed the winger exposed defender Jetro Willems.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Tottenham and England No.1 admitted that Willems faced a tough test stopping Traore as the Wolves attacker’s speed was a problem for any defender.
The 23-year-old Wolves star has regularly featured this season and has racked up two goals as well as four assists across the 17 appearances he has made.
Robinson explained that if a defender opts to tackle Traore too soon then they could end up being caught in no man’s land and if you let him run at you, he was capable of blitzing past you.
When asked if Willems struggled on Sunday due to having to deal with Traore, Robinson told Football Insider: “I think Traore has been outstanding so it’s always going to be a tough test as you don’t know as a defender whether to challenge high and try to win the ball, which could end up with him nipping it around you and you’re out of the game, or you give him a couple of yards to run at you and he runs past you.
“So someone with that pace it’s always going to be difficult and he was exposed at the weekend.”
Willems has featured frequently for Steve Bruce’s side this season after joining the Magpies on loan from German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer as he has played eight times for the club.
The 25-year-old has already gotten off the mark for Newcastle as he has contributed two assists as well as a goal in his outings.
