Oxford United lead race to sign Louie Sibley from Derby County – sources

Oxford United are leading the race to sign Louie Sibley on a free transfer this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The versatile midfielder is currently without a club following his exit from Derby County, as he allowed it to expire at the end of June, despite their promotion to the Championship last season.

The Rams had offered Sibley a new deal, but the 22-year-old turned down the opportunity to stay with the club he’s played for since the Under-8s level.

According to sources, a number of clubs have expressed an interest in him, but Championship new boys Oxford are in pole position to lure him to the Kassam Stadium.

Sibley wraps up his time at Derby with 173 senior appearances, starting 101 of them.

Oxford United will gain a versatile midfielder

Oxford would be acquiring the services of a midfielder capable of playing in various positions in Sibley, as he’s played in central and attacking midfield as well as left-back among other positions.

Last season, Sibley played a crucial role in helping Derby gain promotion to the Championship, featuring in 38 League One games and scoring three goals.

Plus, with 67 appearances in the Championship, Sibley brings the experience of playing in the division which would benefit Oxford’s squad.

Sibley might have let his contract at Derby expire, but Football Insider revealed that James Collins has agreed to a new deal with the club.

The 33-year-old was also out of contract this summer, but he’s chosen to extend his stay at Pride Park Stadium.

In other news, former Oxford midfielder has undergone a medical at Motherwell.
