Paddy Kenny issues Sheffield United automatic promotion verdict after what he’s seen in person

Paddy Kenny claims Sheffield United can achieve automatic promotion this season.

The former Blades stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is backing his former side to secure second place.

Sheffield United drew 0-0 with Huddersfield on Saturday (12 February), leaving the club out of the playoff positions on goal difference ahead of the 3pm games.

However, Kenny is looking further than the playoffs after witnessing his former side’s win over West Brom on Wednesday (9 February).

“I was at the game and it would have been four or five if it wasn’t for Sam Johnstone in the West Brom net,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ewan Kingsbury.

“I know they were down to 10 men but it would have been a comfortable win anyway.

“I don’t remember West Brom really having a shot, there were a few straight at the keeper.

“Sheffield United absolutely put them to bed. I have been looking at that league table and with the form they are in, I’m looking further than play-offs.

“I think we have won eight of our last 10. A few weeks ago I would have snapped your hand off for play-offs.

“I’m looking further now. There are games in hand and with our form, I can see us putting pressure on second place.

“I’m quite confident we will make playoffs but I’m not ruling out getting second.

“The teams up there are quite inconsistent and no one is in as good form as Sheffield United.

“We’re top of the form table and if that continues who knows where we will finish.

“All credit to Heckingbottom, I didn’t think he was the right man. I won’t lie to you.

“He has them playing so well and they all have so much confidence.”

In other news, Sheffield United have been tipped to sign Charlie Goode permanently.
