Paddy Kenny: Sheffield United got it wrong over Ramsdale amid club announcement
David McGoldrick deserved to win the Player of the Year award at Sheffield United ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.
That is according to ex-Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after United announced their end-of-season award winners at half-time in their 1-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday.
Ramsdale won the main prize as well as the Young Player of the Year award, while McGoldrick scooped the Players’ Player and Goal of the Season honours.
Goalkeeper Ramsdale, an £18.5million summer signing, was recently named in England’s 33-man provisional squad for the upcoming European Championship.
McGoldrick meanwhile was the Blades’ top scorer in a flatlining season, the striker netting nine times throughout the campaign.
Kenny lauded Ramsdale for his progression in 2020-21 but insisted that McGoldrick should have been crowned Player of the Year.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “There hasn’t been a massive choice in a very disappointing season.
“I think Aaron Ramsdale has definitely shown what he can do in the last two or three months, and he’s still only a young lad.
“But for me, Dave McGoldrick has been the best. He’s been consistent throughout the whole of the season.
“He got Players’ Player. That’s a massive achievement because I always think that’s the best one to win. It shows what the other players think of you.
“So for me, I’d have gone for Dave McGoldrick and then Aaron Ramsdale second.”
McGoldrick, 33, signed for United on a free transfer after leaving Ipswich in 2018.
He has netted 28 times in 115 appearances during his time at Bramall Lane.
In other news, Arsenal backed to sign Sheffield United star who would be big improvement on outgoing Dani Ceballos.
