Football fans took to Twitter to rip Dele Alli to shreds for his performance in Tottenham’s 2-1 Champions League defeat to Juventus on Wednesday night.
Spurs were eliminated from Europe’s premier competition after the visitors scored twice in three minutes at Wembley to take a 4-3 aggregate lead and decide the destiny of the last-16 tie.
Son Heung-Min gave Tottenham a first-half lead and they appeared to be in control of the match until Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala produced lethal finishes to secure Juve a place in the quarter-finals.
Alli had been named in the starting XI by Mauricio Pochettino and was used in a central attacking midfield role.
But the England international did not have a major impact on the game and was substituted after 86 minutes and replaced by Fernando Llorente as Spurs chased a late goal.
Spurs fans were critical of the performance of Alli on social media as they claim he failed to live up to his stellar reputation.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Gareth Southgate should not take Dele Alli to Russia, he’s overhyped and a liability, but he will…

#COYS don’t get me wrong for 1 second I’m Poch’s biggest fan but I think he got it wrong tonight. Persisting with Alli who was yet again a passenger & not making subs sooner. Proud but hugely disappointed.

Dele Alli stopped playing in 2nd half. Defense thought game was done at 60 minutes mark. Manager just assumed Juv are bringing in subs for formality. What a dross final quarter after dominating 3 of them. That is where you need experience that Juv has in abundance. #COYS #TOTJUV

No mental, Davies is too tired, he’s irreplaceable in the last few games, Poch is too “love” to Dele, we even see Dele walking when the team is attacked, and Poch can’t see the situation when Juve do two substitutions at once. Anyway, I keep in #COYS @Spurs_ID @IndoSpurs

Thats what happens when a couple of your key players decide to leave it in the locker room at halftime. Definitely missed Toby orchestrating the game in the back (very clear leading up to their 2nd goal). Dele and Davies were battling to see who could be less impressive. #COYS
