BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has destroyed Daniel Candeias for his “pathetic” performance in Rangers’ humiliating 5-0 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead on Sunday.

Candeias, 30, was largely blamed for when Odsonne Edouard scored the opening goal in the first-half.

The Ibrox winger got turned inside out by Hoops left-back Kieran Tierney, who went on to cross the ball into Edouard to score a relatively simple goal.

Rangers fans were angry at Candeias’ lack of awareness when he pretty much showed Tierney on to his favoured left foot, and ex-Celtic striker Sutton also tore into the Portuguese attacker on his personal Twitter account.

“Candeias mouthing off when he came off at Hampden… pathetic for the first goal,” he said.

Candeias has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Rangers this term and has been one of a handful of Pedro Caixinha’s to have been a mainstay throughout the campaign.

He has scored eight goals and supplied 13 assists for the Light Blues.

Football Insider verdict

Candeias has been one of Rangers’ best players over the season but it all seems to be falling apart for him in the Old Firm games. For someone who has been so key to the way that the Gers play, he has not done enough in games against Celtic, which suggests that he may be someone who doesn’t enjoy the big occasions and can crumble under the pressure. Steven Gerrard is widely reported to be on his way to Ibrox to be the next manager and he will surely have seen Candeias’ on Saturday and will have a major decision to make on his future in the summer.

In other Rangers news, one of Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mates has dropped a hint that he could be on his way to Ibrox in the summer.
